Jitsu is taught purely as a defensive martial art. It teaches the value of only using the skills learnt to save and protect one's life and those of others, and not to start fights or to use it inappropriately. An adult or child will learn how to defend themselves from different potential attacks such as punches grabs and strangles as well as defence against a variety of weapons.
Discipline
All students will learn the importance of discipline and respect for others and oneself. They will learn how to respect the rules of the Dojo (training room) - such as no swearing, spitting or teasing. They must bow into the room and onto the training mat as you start and finish training. All the learning is made fun and memorable. You are more likely to see more aggression and injuries in premier league football match then a Jitsu class. The student will also learn how to calm a situation down and how to avoid trouble.
Helps encourage Physical Fitness
The rates of obesity have been climbing dramatically over the last few years for both adults and children. Children are spending a lot more time playing video games, watching television and being in front of a computer. One study has found that 9 percent of boys and 13 percent of girls in England are overweight, and the figures are rising. The most significant health risk related to childhood obesity is that it can persist into adulthood: obese teenagers are 10-15 times more likely to become obese adults. There are many health risks associated with being obese in adulthood including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and other serious illnesses. Jitsu can help improve cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, strength and overall energy levels. (Any weight loss regular will normally require exercise and be supported with a calorie controlled diet.)
Overcome Bullying
Students learn to increase their confidence and self esteem that way they become less of a victim and are less likely to attract the unwanted attention of bullies. Students will be taught self defence movements but must first learn how to handle conflict and read body language as well as avoid trouble.
Respect and building character
"Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands." Ann Frank
Respect is a much used word but not one that is not always practiced. All students will learn respect for others as well as personal responsibility. Students are taught the Japanese tradition tom bow into the training room as well as bow to the instructor and their fellow students. These actions help to instil a respect for others and as respect grows so too does the character develop and take from.
"If we change our thoughts we change our actions and our behaviour and to that end we shape our character." Old eastern saying.
Life Skills
Jitsu helps students to interact with others and to take responsibility. They will be asked to help and teach others. Jitsu can enhance their communication skills. They become more engaged and focused on goal setting since they have to learn to pass regular gradings and attend national courses and competitions. Some children can be labelled "hyperactive" by some; however Jitsu allows them to use their abundant energy. Students will attend first aid, assistant instructor and instructor courses. It will help them to have many skills that will help them in later life. The students will also learn Jitsu in its original Japanese language. This learning process can help with brain power and adding to the hand to eye co-ordination that they will also learn
